Netherwar Story Arc 8: Bound by Gold

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

Bound by Gold (Episodes 58-65) PL 12

The Mask of Malador was loose in Freedom City during the two weeks they were trapped in the Idiot Box. Upon their return, our heroes didn’t find themselves with much of a lead to work with. They choose to follow up with a break in at the Southside Botanica in Southside, a local business belonging to one Madame Marie Otando. Otando was a central figure of Southside and a member of Freedom City’s magical community.

When our heroes met Madame Marie something seemed off about her. Without hesitation, they sprang into action, tying her up, and revealing that this was not Madame Marie at all, but a Serpent Person named Sineerie. Sineerie explained that they tracked the Mask to the shop using ancient Lemurian magic and planned to draw forth Malador so they could annihilate their ancient enemy once and for all. She also said that the Serpent People were occupying a flood control tunnel in the swamps west of Freedom City.

The Freedom League Dark called Daedalus, who was back in space exploring a Preserver colony on Europa, for an update. They said that Malador might rise again, and that the flood tunnels were in disrepair. He wished them luck and dispatched a few Synthias to help with the tunnel maintenance.

Our heroes were ambushed by terrifying Serpent People that had been twisted by Malador’s malevolent magics. They fought a harrowing battle in the dark. They survived, but Malador was long gone. Instead, they found Medea tied up and stashed behind a snake statue. She offered her help and cast a geas on herself as proof of good intentions.

Medea and Mortis became fast friends, spending a night out on the town, while the others did research as to where the mask may have gone. The following morning Overdrive had to interview Bowman and Sophie for his job at New Horizon Media. They talked about Operation Custodian and Sophie said some unflattering things about the Freedom League Dark. After the interview, Sophie left, and Serpent People attacked Overdrive, trying to capture the “Faster Mage.”

After the fight the heroes tracked the mask to a colonial mansion called Nightjars in Lantern Hill. They headed that way and found some Serpent People slinking around in colonial era costumes like a bad Hamilton reenactment.

Mortis asked a plucky ghost urchin named Archie to go get Lantern Jack, before the group moved in to investigate.

After a misunderstanding between Bowman, an eighteenth century dress, and the ghost of a punk Satanist, the heroes found their way into a secret cellar. The remaining Serpent People tried to waylay them with a mask that was clearly made of papier-mâché. When Resonant pointed this out, the Serpent People left in a huff, tasking the FLD with stopping Malador.

They found Malador in the chamber beyond, preparing some kind of ritual using a clay body and swirling magical energy. Before the heroes could stop him however, Sophie revealed her presence. She claimed that she had already contained the situation, proclaiming herself the new Master Mage of Earth-Prime. She raised her hands and cast a spell to destroy Malador, but Sophie was deceived. Una rose in the clay body, laughing that she had finally found a way into Earth-Prime. The confluence of magical energy caused a magical explosion. Una, Sophie, and Malador were all sucked into the Mask of Malador and merged into one being. A being which disappeared.

The heroes left Nightjars and raced to the Nerian Nexus to try and do damage control. Sallah showed them the Nexus’ astrolabe room, revealing that Sofunador’s presence was already impacting the multiverse. Before they could delve much deeper, portals opened across the Southside district. Together with the help of Jason in his first costumed appearance, the heroes closed one. Mortis dragged the portal into the Crossroads and disappeared, leaving the others to deal with undead invasions from Hel, Hades, and Irkalla.

Centuria and Gatekeeper worked together to throw Fenrir back into Hel, with Resonant creating an illusion of Hela to distract the great beast. Charon just wanted to buy some records while he had a chance to visit Earth, although the heroes did have to find some way of stopping the River Styx from flooding Southside. Nergal challenged Centuria to single combat in the Eclipse nightclub, but the less we talk about that the better.

With all of the portals closed, Mortis emerged from the Crossroads, but not before having a big adventure in the Underworld…

Netherwar Story Arc 7: Into the Idiot Box

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

Into the Idiot Box (Episodes 50-57) PL 12

The heroes escaped the Vault, but Sophie had already gone, leaving Warden’s uniform behind. She had taken his place at some point during their time in the Dungeon Dimension. Not wanting to leave an ally behind, the FLD made their way to the Dungeon Dimension’s directory. They were able to track Warden to the Decommissioning Center from there, and they raced off to rescue him.

Unfortunately, it was a trap. The entrance to the Decommissioning Center was covered in gray TV static. The Decommissioning Center was a lie, it was in fact the DC universe.

The heroes stepped into the DC and found out it was actually a portal to the DC Animated Universe. They wound up in Arkham Asylum as imagined by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. Trying to stick to the plan, they approached Doctor Hugo Strange asking to see the Warden. Dr. Strange for his part took them down to the cellblocks where they found a disheveled Bruce Wayne. Before they could clarify that wasn’t who they were looking for, Hugo filled the prison with gas, knocking everyone out.

The gang awoke in a cellblock full of a who’s who of Gotham criminals. Joker, Harley, Scarecrow, Solomon Grundy, Poison Ivy, and Scar-Face, also known as the doll guy next to Centuria. After conversing with Batman’s enemies, the annoyed voice of the all-powerful trickster, Quirk filled the prison. He said “I thought this was a super hero show, get to the punching, and set everyone free.” The heroes fought the villains and triumphed, however before they could enjoy their victory, Quirk moved them to a new show: Poppy’s Place; a Sesame Street inspired kid’s program.

There the new Muppet Freedom League Dark ran into little Suzie and Felix the Grump. Felix tried to say that there were no words that began with the letter C. Much to his chagrin, the costumed crimefighters charismatically challenged his concerns and conjured some cunning, candid collections of characters whose conception point was C.

Quirk said the show was too boring and spiced things up by sending out a massive letter C to come up with some more examples. After defeating the letter C our heroes found themselves channel surfing at the whims of Quirk.

Here are the shows they wound up in:

  • Contessa: A Bridgerton-inspired period romance piece where Bowman and Overdrive fought for the love of Centuria.
  • Tampa Heat: Miami Vice-inspired 80s cop show, where we met Calvin’s famous character Shep for the first time. The group overthrew a drug cartel in truly 80s fashion.
  • Battlespace 2000: Star Trek-inspired romp through a science fiction set. Our heroes acquired some bitumacite and stopped an intergalactic warlord.
  • Surreal Home Makeover: Extreme Home Makeover mashed up with Ghost Hunters. Our team cleansed a one-room school house of it’s scary ghost girl and turned it into a trendy new small house.
  • Infomercial Hell: Our heroes faced the struggles of everyone who tries to do any mundane thing in an infomercial.
  • Stay Tooned: 90’s-sitcom with a talking cartoon named Jaxx Jaguar. They helped him keep his year’s supply of anchovy pizza through deception and quick thinking.
  • Pawnography: Pawn Stars, mystic edition. The heroes pawned off the Leviathan Band, a magic belt they recovered in Broken Strings which allows its wearer to breathe underwater for 7 minutes.
  • Freedom’s Got Talent: American reality TV competition, with superheroes!
  • The Stag: The Bachelor meets American Ninja Warrior, with the Arctic Fox as the bachelor.

Rather than keep playing Quirk’s game the way he wanted them to, they subverted his expectations in true modern television storytelling fashion. Lady Annabella threw herself in front of Lord Raynald’s blade, letting herself die rather than give into her father and society’s expectations. It was truly dramatic.

Quirk tried to say he didn’t like that ending, but our clever heroes convinced him that it was in fact the perfect ending to the story of Contessa. On top of that smarty pants deception, they convinced Quirk to go test out his prison cell in the Dungeon Dimension to see if the wards were still down, inadvertently trapping the trickster once more. That probably won’t come back to bite the Freedom League Dark later.

From there the heroes exited the Dungeon Dimension and returned to Freedom City where they learned they had been missing for two weeks and some of their TV exploits were shown to the general public. Nothing incriminating for their secret identities, but enough that some of them were a little more famous than before they went in.

Noteworthy NPCs

Villains: Quirk, Television Tropes

Allies: Warden, Arctic Fox, Sallah

Netherwar Story Arc 6: Broken Strings

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

Broken Strings (Episodes 46-49) PL 12

The heroes returned to Freedom City, sort of sobered from their experience with the speedsters, but ready to defend their home once more. Early one morning, a pair of transforming robots attacked the city leading to a gleeful Bowman chasing them on the Bowcycle. It turned out there was more than meets the eye for these robots, as they were a distraction to cover multiple crimes across Freedom City. The FLD headed to the Kirby Museum of Fine Art to find security footage of a painting coming to life and smashing a vase (as well as a couple of really surly police officers.)

There was also a break in at the Upper Deck card shop on the Boardwalk where some Freedom League Dark action figures came to life and trashed the place and an attack on a houseboat by inflatable sharks. The team followed these strange capers to Pete E Popcorn’s Family Funhouse in time to find Warden under attack by an animatronic band.
Warden explained that the Dungeon Dimension was under attack by the forces of Toyboy and asked the heroes to help. Toyboy was apparently after the Mask of Malador. He did explain that they had to play it cool when they got there however, because Warden was hiding a really big secret. Upon arriving in the Dungeon Dimension, they found Adrian Eldritch, alive and locked in one of the cells.

Adrian explained that he had faked his death and locked himself away for 14 years, hiding himself here so he could play his role in the upcoming catastrophe. The arrival of the heroes was the cue he needed for the next part of the plan. He joined the FLD and together they navigated the Dungeon Dimension, facing the ancient dracolich Mac Aohda, and racing to the Vault where they confronted Toyboy. In the chaos, the Mask of Malador flew away, disappearing out of the Dungeon Dimension. The heroes banded together and stopped Toyboy, but as they did, the Vault door slammed shut. Sophie’s voice answered from the other side, stating that she wouldn’t let them out while Adrian was still alive. It turned out Sophie was one of Eldritch’s former apprentices, one he thought too dangerous to become Master Mage. He wiped her memory, but it didn’t stick and Sophie had been using her connection to the FLD to track down Adrian for her vengeance. Adrian sacrificed himself, consuming himself in phoenix fire but not before bestowing his Cloak of Flight upon Resonant.

Villains: Toyboy, Sophie, Mac Aohda, Bres the Beautiful

Netherwar Story Arc 5: Shattered Speedster

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

Shattered Speedster (Episodes 38-45) PL 11

Our heroes returned from the Maw of Vhoka, victorious, but with a new Overdrive. Centuria and Overdrive became reacquainted while the others broke off to check in with their loved ones. Bowman, through his new sidekick Bolt, found two other speedsters causing havoc in Freedom City. Rather than alert the rest of the group, he went to investigate on his own and got beat down by Godspeed and Strike-Out. They took his bow, fired arrows into him, and dropped him at Freedom Hall.

The following morning, Thunderbolt knocked on Centuria’s door with a bouquet of roses, candy in a heart, and with his old biological body back. That was awkward for everyone involved, but “luckily” the moment was interrupted by everyone racing to check on the injured Bowman. Bowman expressed distrust of Centuria and Overdrive in a tense exchange and was only talked down by Resonant and the sight of an astral Seven shedding tears. Bowman was left to recover while the others went to investigate. This was where we discovered that the Synthias love the game Uno, even though Bowman wouldn’t play with them.

Daedalus revealed to the group that Overdrive’s use of the Possibility Shard caused a rift in the multiverse that brought dozens of Overdrive’s to Earth-Prime. He theorized this was because of the vibrational nature of Overdrive’s abilities and the Wellspring of Velocity’s ability to flow between universes. He also suspected it was the reason for Thunderbolt’s sudden recorporealness. Daedalus needed more information to formulate a means of solving this particular issue, and dispatched the FLD to investigate sources of the Wellspring in Freedom City.

The first led them to Dave’s house, which had become a 1950s American dream home. Centuria found Dave’s daughter, a little girl named Kaity who looked surprisingly like Centuria, and later that night they found out that Tracey was actually an evil witch who had replaced Dave’s wife and turned him into a terrifying monster man. They blew up the house and kept Kaity safe.

The group soon realized that Godspeed and Strike-Out had abducted their loved ones and faced their first major defeat when they went after the two evil speedsters. Mortis managed to save Resonant’s friend Sam, but Overdrive was taken and the group was forced to flee. The players then had an episode where they played as the abducted loved ones, working together to sneak out of their prison. Godspeed and Strike-Out brought them to a prison run by Overlord, Overdrive’s father from another dimension who was hellbent on absorbing everyone’s speed in order to seize the Wellspring of Velocity for himself. The NPC heroes found dozens of Overdrives, Traceys, and Centurias who had already been drained. Overdrive attacked Overlord to cover the others’ escape. In the fight, he disintegrated Overlord and sacrificed himself to stabilize the Wellspring. The others found themselves in Emerald City where they connected with Tracey’s friend Mongrel. The group called for help.

Meanwhile in Freedom City, Thunderbolt’s body turned back to energy and they sprang into action to lock him back in his containment suit before he exploded and destroyed Freedom City. Every other speedster lost their powers and the original Overdrive rematerialized just as Tracey called for help.

The group stormed Overlord’s prison, but didn’t find the depowered Godspeed or Strike-Out. They did find the surviving Centurias, Daves, and Traceys, and they opened a portal to send them home. Centuria and Bowman stumbled upon an A.I. named Fantasia who appeared to be working for Overdrive’s father, the real one, not Overlord. Fantasia offered Centuria the ability to put her husband and Thunderbolt back into a real body, but she didn’t trust the A.I.’s intentions so she refused.

The group staged an ambush for Overdrive’s father, Death Race, but when he arrived he was also without his powers. Death Race wasn’t looking for a fight, he wanted to let his son know that he had been searching for him because his powers were causing his body to break down and he was going to die soon. He wanted to salvage what he could of their relationship before he met his end. Dave said it would take time, but he was willing to try.

Allies: Fantasia, Death Race, Jason, Sophie, Tracey, Nick, Thunderbolt, Daedalus, Johnny Rocket, Kaity, The Atom Family

Netherwar Story Arc 4: Pentagram Peril

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

Pentagram Peril (Episodes 24-37) PL 11

Our heroes returned to Freedom City triumphant, just in time to attend a gala being held in honor of Adrian Eldritch at the Freedom City Super Museum. It was at this time we were introduced to Sophie, a colleague of Bowman’s working with him to revitalize Southside through Operation Custodian. The two of them struck up a romantic relationship (despite Fletch not being super smooth in the beginning.) The team enjoyed the evening up until it was attacked by the Factor Four.

The elemental villains escaped with an object from the exhibit, a Bloodstone of Vhoka. A similar robbery took place at the same time over at FCU, with Professor Azoth’s homunculi stealing a second Bloodstone. Our heroes learned from Sallah that there were five of these stones in total, and if they were all brought together, they could provide power to any number of terrible rituals. So they took off after the Factor Four.

Centuria caught the fiery team member by slamming him to the ground with a parking meter, declaring for the first, but not the last time that she was in fact the attacker.

After scanning his magical energy, our heroes found the employer of the Factor Four, the hateful spirit Knightfire.
Knightfire was using a construction office in association with Operation Custodian to orchestrate his plan. He mobilized an alt-right militia in Southside and caused a devastating explosion to distract the Freedom League Dark, while he dispatched the remaining members of the Factor Four to recover the other bloodstones. One from Dakana, one from Sub-Terra, and one from Antarctica in a lost temple known as Nullatempus.

Our heroes stopped the attack on Southside, but realized the villains had a head start. Bowman called his contact in Dakana, Internal Security Director Gawiji Habimana, to let him know to increase security around the Bloodstone and then they departed for Antarctica. There they found the temple under attack by the Arctic Fox and his VLPES mercenaries. The temple’s defenses had already dealt with most of the mercenaries, so the heroes and the Arctic Fox struck an uneasy truce. Together they conquered three challenges and unlocked the Bloodstone chamber.

Unfortunately, Sylph was already inside and driven quite mad by the guardian of the temple. This guardian, a terrifying hydraesque monster arose but the heroes were able to defeat it. They took the Bloodstone and left the frigid wasteland, but not before Bowman rather conspicuously placed a tracking arrow on the Arctic Fox’s plane.

Next, the Freedom League Dark headed to Sub-Terra, a realm located deep in the Earth’s crust. They attempted to use the Alternity Atlas to appear within the Terra King’s palace, but the magic of Sub-Terra warped the book and they wound up in a maze-like expanse. They managed to escape using Overdrive’s speed, but found something completely unexpected in the tunnels: an outpost full of Resonant’s people, the Lifandi. These soldiers, led by Agent Emerald, were fighting a group of stone men and Man-Drake. During the battle, Overdrive used his Possibility Shard to cut himself free from a mystical binding. In the process he switched places with the Overdrive of Centuria’s universe, who up until this point, was trapped in Davey, the Overdrive action figure in Centuria’s pocket. This would have far reaching consequences.

The heroes managed to capture Agent Emerald after a tense standoff between her and Resonant. Before they could interrogate her, the group came under attack by Doctor Tectonic who said they were trespassing in his domain. Mortis managed to free Doctor Tectonic’s mind from the nanites which had corrupted it, performing a sort of machine exorcism/reverse possession. Unfortunately, Agent Emerald escaped in the chaos. With all of these threats out of the way, the heroes managed to arrive in Sub-Terra, only to find out that their connection to Daedalus made them an enemy of the Terra King and that Granite had already absconded with the Bloodstone. The Terra King gave them a stay of execution in exchange for their returning the Bloodstone. He placed a geas on Resonant to ensure it happened.

After a quick pit stop in Dakana, where our heroes learned that security had been successful in protecting the Bloodstone, they returned to the Nerian Nexus. They had a couple of the stones, but the remainder were still in Knightfire and Doctor Azoth’s hands. Sallah informed the heroes that the villains would be making their way to the Maw of Vhoka, a Middle-Eastern volcano which was used in ancient times to destroy magical items to absorb their essence. The Freedom League Dark arrived just in time to stop the villains from destroying the stones to take their power. Knightfire was utterly destroyed by Mortis, never to be seen again and the others were taken into custody by Warden, except for Granite who fled the scene and is still at large.

Netherwar Story Arc 3: The Terminus Invaders

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

The Terminus Invaders (Episodes 12-23) PL 10

Centuria kicked off this arc by using her Possibility Shard on herself, swapping places with a Centuria who was the sole survivor of a universe destroyed by Una in a different Netherwar. This Centuria was fierce, a little unstable, and grateful to see her friends alive and well. She caused a scene at the boardwalk with a costumed Overdrive. Eventually the group met with her and discussed next steps. The rest of the Freedom League, including their former teammate Nova, had gone on a mission to space and were overdue for check in.

The group went to Freedom Hall where they met Daedalus’ robot concierge Synthia, who gave them access to a Pegasus where Resonant found her famous space suit. They found the Freedom League’s ship under attack by the bounty hunter Loma Slife. After driving off Loma Slife, they headed to the planet’s surface and found Daedalus under the “care” of Physician Friendly, one of Omega’s lieutenants. Daedalus was able to tell the group that the rest of the Freedom League was taken to the Terminus, and they mounted a rescue mission across dimensions.

Our heroes freed the mind-controlled Freedom League after a brief conflict and teamed up with the Furions who told them that Taarvon the Undying had ousted Omega and become the ruler of the Terminus. They concocted a plan to stop Taarvon, but before they could implement it, they asked to meet with Tommen the Archivist. Bowman joined the group at this point. They saved the Archivist and were given access to his Source Book. Each asked the book a question and received an answer.

The Archivist sent them directly to the battle with Taarvon. The combined might of the Freedom League and our heroes was barely enough to stop him. Resonant, in a high stakes gamble teleported herself back to Una’s inner sanctum and cast a ritual to sever Taarvon’s connection to Una’s magic. She also finally created a proper superhero costume at this moment. Resonant learned that Seven and Una weren’t dead, but instead had fused into one being and the two were fighting over control of that form. As she was doing this, Mortis freed Omega from Taarvon’s mental influence. The fight wasn’t without casualties however. Most of the Freedom League was slain in the conflict.

Fortunately, Mortis wouldn’t take that lying down. He went into the Underworld and negotiated with Hades to release their souls. Hades agreed on the terms of Mortis plugging a hole in the Underworld that was leaking Nether magic into the dimension. Mortis and the deceased Freedom Leaguers accomplished the mission and Mortis learned that he was the Master Mage of the Crossroads. Everyone returned to Earth-Prime and Daedalus officially invited the team to join the Freedom League, creating the Freedom League Dark.

Bowman officially joined the ranks of FLD at this point, serving as a liaison between the proper Freedom League and this new team. This was a role he initially took begrudgingly, as he had a relationship with Seven and he laid partial blame for her demise at the feet of the new heroes. Fortunately, after they rescued the Freedom League from the Underworld and proved their mettle, he came around to trust and respect them.

Villains: Loma Slife, Physician Friendly, The Freedom League, Shadivan Steelgrave, Taarvon the Undying, Omega

Netherwar Story Arc 2: Assault on the Nerian Nexus

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

Assault on the Nerian Nexus (Episodes 8-11) PL 10

Ten years later we rejoined the Liberty League, who had grown up on their own paths. Death Gate spent some time as an anti-hero named Mortis in Ferroburg before settling down in Freedom City as a janitor for a local high school. Overdrive stayed a superhero but went West to Emerald City and beyond before taking a job at New Horizon Media back in Freedom. Resonant opened a bookstore/massage and Reiki healing center. Darkstar took the name Nova and joined the Freedom League.

One fateful day, each of our heroes received a warning from the distressed spirit of Seven that the Nerian Nexus (the now vacant sanctum of Earth-Prime’s Master Mage) was under attack by several unaffiliated villains. Mortis, Overdrive, and Resonant raced over for a tense reunion. They were joined by the Freedom Leaguer Centuria and together they stormed the Nexus.

While inside, they faced Devil Ray and Dracula (who was one-shotted by Centuria and will never forget it) and became trapped in a hall of mirrors somewhere within the fabric of reality. Each of them saw flashes of the future and hints that there might be more to them than they ever imagined. They were eventually set free when they struck a bargain with a creature calling itself Glimpse. Glimpse let them back into the Nexus and gave each of them a Possibility Shard: a piece of mirror that grants its user the ability to change themselves by scouring the multiverse for a suitable replacement.

After leaving Glimpse, they fought Tom Cypress and Medea in the Nexus’ observatory. The group prevented Medea from taking the Alternity Atlas, an artifact that allows its owner to teleport just about anywhere. After the fight, a man known as Warden arrived and took the villains into custody. They also found a terrifying teddy bear at the scene. After freeing the Nexus and meeting its caretaker, Sallah, the group became the new masters of the house and agreed to keep working together for the moment.

Noteworthy NPCs

Villains: Abracadaver, Sandstone, The Devil’s Advocates, Devil Ray, Dracula, Tom Cypress, Medea

Netherwar Story Arc 1: Prequel

January 21, 2021 //  by USPadmin

Prequel (Episodes 1-7) PL 8

Our story began with a group of students at the Claremont Academy. Their first day at the prestigious school for superpowered students was interrupted by an attack at Freedom Hall. Their friend, the recently graduated Seven, was at the headquarters of the Freedom League for her interview to join when Bres the Beautiful launched an invasion to recover his Orb of Ghorrumaz. Seven cast a spell which malfunctioned, summoning her friends (and a few new faces) instead of the Freedom League. Together the group defeated Bres, but they soon realized this was orchestrated by Una, Queen of the Netherworld.

The newly christened Liberty League, went with Seven to the Netherworld, where they liberated the Nightsong work camp and survived a harrowing journey by train to the capital city of Nethermoor. Once there, they infiltrated Una’s palace, embarrassed her guard captain with a one-shot knockout by Seven, and fell into a trap. Una tricked them into her personal inner sanctum and locked the group inside a pocket dimension. With some quick thinking they managed to escape, only to learn that Una was now on Earth-Prime, ready to seize the planet as the 1,000th world in her domain so she could become a new god.

Our heroes raced across dimensions to Freedom City and faced Una. They stopped her (and her dragons) but the young Death Gate’s Soul Vault went out of control and threatened to suck everyone into the Underworld. Seven and Una were both sucked down into the vortex and Seven sacrificed herself to seal the portal before anyone else was hurt. This was a serious blow to the group and everyone went their separate ways.

Noteworthy NPCs

Villains: Bres the Beautiful, Kada’vrus, Zaubrum the Inquisitor, Una, Dave the Skeleton, Shanmai

Allies: Dolos and Cadrim, Seven, Taesin the Doctor, Rada the Mayor of Tarabahva
