A Tribute to Howard

December 30, 2021 //  by USPadmin

A Tribute to Howard

On December 23, 2021, we lost a light. Our friend and fellow cast member, Howard (many of you know him as Bulwark) passed away very unexpectedly due to a heart attack.

This past week, we did not record an episode of City of Destiny, instead, we came together to have a brief tribute to him.

Thank you Howard for gifting us with your talent, compassion, and creativity. We appreciate it more than we can say and we hope your memory will always be a blessing.

City of Destiny will resume with new episodes on January 4th, 2022. We will be moving forward and writing Marshall out of the story with as much grace as we possibly can. But in the meantime, here is our tribute to Howard. If you’re watching here or on YouTube, Howard and Bulwark will continue to appear until we finish Episode 24.

USP End of Year Check In 2021

December 23, 2021 //  by Alexander Thomas

USP End of Year Check In 2021

Holy cow everyone, I can’t believe it’s already the end of 2021. This year has been a heck of a ride here at USP, and I just wanted to take some time as we go into 2022 to talk about some of our highlights from the past year and to let you all know a little bit about our exciting plans in the new year.

USP is almost two years old at this point and those two years have been some of the most uncertain times in recent memory. It has been energizing building this community, providing a welcome respite from everything going on. I have loved our games, our conversations, and I appreciate all of you who have stopped by to say hello in stream, dropped a comment on one of our YouTube videos, or just read our blog posts here on the site. Thank you everyone from the bottom of our hearts, we couldn’t do all this without you.

So, here’s a few things we accomplished that I’m particularly proud of in 2021:

  • Founding this website and blog. It has been wonderful having this space to function as a launch pad for all of our content. We’ve featured works from talented writers and artists on the blog, and we’ve kept a fairly consistent upload schedule. Love to see it!
  • Origins 2021. This was our first convention appearance in person, with Andy, Aaron, and myself all running games where we got to interact with people directly. It was amazing getting the chance to introduce new folks to our platform and playtest something that I’ll talk about a little later in the wild. I’m immensely proud of everyone who put in the work to represent us in the physical world, and can’t wait to see what we can do at Origins 2022 and other conventions next year.
  • Founding the Earth-Prime Tabletop Universe. This year saw us focusing on Mutants & Masterminds, but more specifically with Green Ronin’s flagship setting of Earth-Prime. I started us in February with Netherwar and we are on track to play through at least February or March of 2022 with this epic story. On top of Netherwar, we added City of Destiny, our playthrough of the Emerald City Knights campaign, but the kicker is, both games exist in the same world at the same time. We’ve even had a massive crossover episode with 10 PCs at once, GMed masterfully by Aaron. Crystal Fraiser and Steve Kenson even came on as guest stars in a couple of episodes, and we became an affiliate with Green Ronin. And I can assure you the EPTU is only beginning.
  • Highlighting Other RPGs. Even with our M&M showcase, we found time to shine a light on a number of other lesser known RPGs this year. Fallout Wasteland Warfare, Werewolf the Apocalypse, Monster of the Week, and the Blue Rose Adventurer’s Guide all got series on the channel. We had one shots as well for Call of Cthulhu, D&D, 7th Sea, Alien: Colonial Marines, Things From the Flood, and Crash Pandas.
  • Becoming an LLC. We officially became an LLC in the state of Ohio, making us kind of legitimate. I just think that’s neat!

It’s been an awesome year, but next year is going to be even better. Just to announce a couple of exciting things we have planned in 2022:

  • Publishing TTRPG Content. Starting with our first adventure module: The Lost Library for Mutants & Masterminds, we are going to be creating material for you to use at your home tables. We’re looking into adventures, NPCs, locations, option rules, all sorts of things for all sorts of systems. Keep an eye here on the site as that information becomes available.
  • Monthly One-Shots. We’re going to be doing monthly one-shots on top of our November/December Holiday series so we can show-off even more systems throughout the year. We’ll be starting with finishing some “one-shots” I ran earlier in 2021, since I have the tendency to write more than I need. Surprise. But starting in March we’ll be doing brand new content, including a Lancer stream run by Calvin! If you have suggestions for systems we should look into, please post them in the comments below, or let us know in Twitch chat!
  • EPTU Expanded. Netherwar Season 1 is coming to an end early in 2022, but that crew will be taking on another EPTU series after Netherwar comes to a pause. I won’t spoil exactly what corner of Earth-Prime we’re going to, but just know it’s going to be pretty Stellar.

That’s just a few of the exciting updates we have to look forward to in 2022. As always, thank you so much for your support as our community has grown and found its footing. All of us here at USP greatly appreciate it. Please have a Happy New Year and play something fun for us!

Messing Up as a GM (Or “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Random”)

December 9, 2021 //  by Alexander Thomas

Messing Up As a GM

There is an incredible amount of pressure placed on the Gamemaster in a tabletop roleplaying game group. The GM wears a lot of hats: from storyteller to referee to improviser and many others. When anyone is juggling that many plates, eventually they will drop one, splattering the folks watching and making a big old mess. GMs are human, and humans are imperfect creatures. That doesn’t mean the campaign or even the session is ruined, it just means that you have to pick yourself up and get back to it. No one is the perfect GM all the time, it doesn’t matter how much experience or how much trust your players have in you. I actually messed up in our Netherwar series recently, and I figured it would be helpful to GMs out there to hear what happened and what steps I took to address the issue that I caused.

Let me start by briefly summarizing what happened and explaining how I really stepped in it this time. At the end of Episode 71: Drop the Jupiter, I left my heroes on a cliffhanger. This isn’t unusual for my GM style, and I was heading to New Orleans for my honeymoon the following week, so I really wanted to stick them with something juicy. I had the episode end with Andy’s character Resonant learning that her mother was in trouble in her home dimension of Leifandi and with Jonesy’s character Mortis learning that his fiancé Nick was seemingly taken by force from their home. As a storyteller, I thought this would create an interesting dynamic in the group where they would have to tackle the emotional stakes of who they would help first or force them to split up to try and do both at the same time. I thought that would be a spicy story with lots of potential drama and roleplaying, and that would have been fine if I were writing a book.

Unfortunately, what works when you’re writing a book, doesn’t always come out that way in a group storytelling situation. So I stuck this grenade in their laps and went away for my honeymoon, none the wiser.

When I got back, I settled in to plan out the next stages of the story, thinking about the various ways the heroes might attempt to solve the problem I’d placed before them. I planned possible NPCs that the heroes might enlist to pad out their numbers in case they wanted to split up. I also wrote out some consequences for following either of the leads in different orders. Not with the intention of harming one of the beloved NPCs, but ways that the investigations would be more difficult for whomever was chosen second. Unfortunately, this whole session was going to be tougher than I thought, and was not my best work.

Thirty minutes before the session began, as we were doing our audio/video checks, one of the players said to me that they were frustrated as a player, not as a character. That was not my intention with the split. It is never my intention to frustrate the players. At the end of the day gaming is meant to be a fun escape and chance to tell stories with your friends. What they said really struck me. The player elaborated, stating that they were upset that their character wouldn’t be able to see all of the story beats if they decided to split up. The party would be separated and wouldn’t get to see the insight into either Resonant or Mortis’ backstory, and they believed that what was at stake was forcing them to have to split up.

That all made sense to me, so at that moment I started devising a way that everyone could be in two places at once. We’re playing a magic super hero game, anything can be possible. This was an important decision, because it showcases one of the things I always stress to GMs. Don’t fall so in love with your story that you deprive your players of agency. I could have told the player, I’m sorry, but this is what I have planned, suck it up. But that wouldn’t have resolved the issue, and could have affected that player’s trust in me. So, I came up with a way to progress the story so everyone could see every plot point, but I added a consequence to this solution.

The heroes uncovered a spell that could duplicate them, allowing two parties of PCs to head after both leads at the same time. However one of those groups was Freaky Friday-ed. They had swapped bodies so when we get to that group, they will be playing with one another’s powers, which I think is going to be a blast.

Improvising and adapting to the player’s mood is so crucial as a GM. At the end of the day, if your players are having fun you are doing your job as a GM. I took a situation that was frustrating and I turned it into an opportunity for a fun story beat. The way to do this is by saying “Yes, and” or “No, but” more often than you say no. Don’t be afraid of the ideas that come out of the void and trust in your creativity. Some of my favorite moments in gaming have been off the cuff sparks of inspiration. Improvisation is actually how I got my start working in the TTRPG industry as a writer, but that’s a story for another time.

Unfortunately, the disastrous cliffhanger wasn’t the only issue I had while running the game that night. As I said, it was not my best work as a GM. When we eventually went to Leifandi, I felt personally that I let Andy down. He wrote an amazing blog post about Leifandi which you can find here. A blog post which I should have read closer when I was doing my preparation for the adventure that week. I stress all the time that GMs should include their players in the world-building for the campaign. It helps build player investment in the story and the world, but that only works if you take what they give you and learn it. Ask questions, look for clarification, and do it before you get to the table.

In that session, I leaned on Andy, asking him to describe things, partially because I wanted to give him a chance to show off this shiny thing he made, but also because I didn’t know the material as well as I should. I also got the names incorrect on a few major NPCs which added to this feeling of indifference on my part. I felt after the session that Andy was offended, and rightly so. This leads to the next lesson in cleaning up GM messes, communication and accountability.

In the days after that session, I reached out to Andy so we could have a one on one video chat, so I could A.) Apologize and B.) Get clarification of details so I could fulfil my responsibilities as GM and write accurate flavor text/plotlines. There’s a lot of ego tied up in being a Gamemaster, and you can use that ego to go on a power trip with your friends, or you can admit when you’re wrong and take steps to correct it. Andy was very generous with me, giving me information that I needed and brainstorming the trajectory of the Leifandi story arc that we’re still playing through.

Your players want to have a good time, just as much as you, and it is never you against them as a GM. That little bit of communication and owning the mistake prevented the situation from spiraling further, and I think in the subsequent Leifandi adventures, we’ve hit our stride again as a group. More importantly, I think I have maintained the trust of my players, which is paramount when running an ongoing campaign. I hope my example can help you, if you’re going through a tough time as a GM. Thank you for reading and may your hits always be crits.

Sensei Agawa

December 2, 2021 //  by Howard Brody

“Sensei Agawa?”

The young woman looked like she was still in high school but Wendy was used to that. She’d be far from the first young woman to want to know how to defend herself before heading to college.

“Yes. Wendy Agawa.” She shook the woman’s hand.

“Lisa Wellman. Pleased to meet you.”

“How can I help you, Lisa? Are you looking for a self-defense class?”

“No. Well, maybe. Not for me. But …”

Wendy walked over to the counter and grabbed a schedule.

“This is our –“

“I’m not here for me, Sensei. I’m here for my grampers. And he needs more than a self-defense class.”

“What’s he looking for?”

“Private lessons. With you.”

“Is your grandfather in some kind of trouble?”

Lisa laughed. “I’m … not really sure how to answer that.”

“If he’s being harassed or abused there are –“

“No! It’s nothing like that.”

“Then I don’t understand. And, honestly, I don’t usually give private lessons.”

“I get it. I do. But this is a special situation.” Wendy looked at her. “OK, I wasn’t supposed to show you this unless I needed to.” She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone. “If I show you something, do you promise to keep it a secret? It’s not illegal or anything, just … confidential.”

Wendy was somewhere between curiosity and irritation but this pushed it a little closer to curiosity. “Sure, Lisa. I can keep a secret.”

Lisa smiled and spoke into her phone. “Date night footage, AEGIS feed, do-not-tell-Mom protocol.” Wendy wasn’t sure what all that meant but she knew what AEGIS was. Lisa handed her the phone and she took it.

The screen showed a street with an SUV on its side. Behind it, she recognized two of the new Storm Breakers – Portal and Khione – and an old man in a suit. He was pushing them through a glowing purple … hole, was the only way to describe it. And then the SUV exploded.

Wendy gasped and looked at Lisa. Lisa smiled at her and pointed to the phone.

When the flames subsided. The old man was still there, standing up, but shrugging the burning tatters of his shirt off. Then he turned and looked at someone the camera wasn’t catching and yelled,

“Really?”

Wendy handed the phone back.

“Your grandfather is …?”

“Bulwark. Yes”

“So the old man thing isn’t a shtick?”

“No. He’s eighty-three.”

“And he still wants to … This isn’t a recapture my youth thing, is it?”

“No. Well, I don’t know. Maybe. But he’s got these … abilities now and feels like he needs to do something with them to make a difference and it’s not like he isn’t capable. He’s really, really tough. And he doesn’t need his walker anymore. And his teeth are growing back. I think he might be starting to get younger, which would be great but how do we explain that to Mom?” She took a deep breath and blew it out slowly. “Sorry, I’m rambling.”

“It’s fine. What exactly does he want from lessons with me?”

“Well, Grampers hasn’t thrown a punch since he was in Vietnam …”

Netherwar Location Spotlight: Leifandi

November 18, 2021 //  by Andy

Leifandi

Leifandi exists in a parallel reality adjacent to Earth Prime, and though connections to the dimension are rare, they do occur as natural phenomena occasionally, though direct breach of the walls of reality is the usual method of transit between the two. There have been few visitors from other dimensions to Leifandi, and of those the most notable is Dr. Atom from Earth Prime. The planet is a near analogue of Earth, with oceans, forests, lakes, vast plains, and arctic areas, though there are no deserts. The most striking difference between the two, however, is the various array of crystalline formations that lay across the landscapes, sometimes entwined with the local flora itself. These crystalline formations are generally made up of gemstone-like material, with one major difference; these formations have some form of consciousness and sentience, with the ability to lend their innate power to the people of Leifandi most in touch with the planet’s mystical energy.

The People of Leifandi

Those who call Leifandi home are multiple and varied. The most human like are the ones are referred to as Leifandians. Their forms are as varied as other humans, though natural hair colorations can tend to hew towards the colors of gemstones, with dark greens and light blues being the most common. The most striking difference between a Leifandian and a human is their eyes; while a humans iris’ are round, a Leifandian’s are subtly faceted like a cut gemstone, only truly discernable up close. It is speculated that the facets are due to the crystalline structures that dot their planet, a melding of the two dominant life forms of the planet. Though some other theories exist, they are generally not held to have any basis in reality. Not all of the Leifandians are able to connect to the planet’s mystical energy, but those that are create a bond with one crystalline structure, allowing them access to the energy it represents and the ability to manifest it. The ability to wield Gem Magic is seen as a high honor, and those who can are usually destined for great things. It is quite rare for a Leifandian to be able to bond to more than one type of crystal; only certain individuals, like the Master Mage of the dimension, have ever been known to wield more than three, though history does tell of one who had mastery of nearly a half dozen or more. However, an individual capable of that type of control has not been seen on Leifandi in several centuries, if not longer.

Next are the Crystalloids, creatures of crystal who roam the planets surface and tend to the various flora entwined with the crystalline formations along with those formations who stand apart. Not much is known about these creatures; some speculate that they are some offshoot of the crystalline formations themselves, a sort of progeny, while others believe that they are a younger version of the crystalline formations, experiencing Leifandi before eventually settling in to be one with the planet. They vary greatly in height and color; imposing figures made of greens and blacks or smaller, nimbler figures of orange, yellow or blue. One thing is clear however; these beings share some connection to the crystal formations, and history has various accounts of them being fiercely protective of the crystal formations and any flora they intermingled with. There have been interactions between these beings and those Leifandians who can connect to the planet’s mystical energies, but there is no recorded history of these beings ever speaking in any sense of the word.

And finally, the crystalline formations themselves. As stated, they share some connection to everything that exists within the planet, often intertwined with local flora. However, outside of the knowledge that these formations have some form of sentience and a connection to the mystical energy of the planet, little is truly known about them.

Leifandian History

In the earliest eras of Leifandi, there was conflict, much as it is with other worlds. Conflict between the Leifandians and the Crystalloids, as the Leifandians sought to move beyond their nomadic lifestyles and begin to settle in larger and larger encampments. The early Leifandians may not have known the connection the Crystalloids shared with the crystalline formations, only knowing that the flora that was melded with the formations made for sturdier construction materials for shelters. These early conflicts led to the discovery of Gem Magic, and it was through this discovery that an understanding between the two was founded. The first Leifandian Master Mage (for it is not known if there was a Crystalloid or crystal formation that held that title before it was passed to the Leifandians) oversaw the foundation of cities and villages in harmony with the land itself, able to draw out both the necessary materials and the energy by which these settlements could begin to build around.

Once the cities and villages were established, there was an era of general peace, as the Leifandians grew to understand their connection to the planet’s mystical energy and the crystalline formations themselves. It was not without its periods of upheaval, however, as there are almost always individuals who wish to garner more than what they have. During one of these periods, it was noted that the overuse of crystal magic had a horrible side effect; if a Leifandian mage drew too much energy from their bonded crystal without its consent, the formation would explode into splinters, and if those splinters affixed themselves to any Leifandian or Crystalloid without the force of will to resist they were drained of something, be it life force or something similar, causing them to become devoid of all reason and feeling. For those who could resist the splinter’s effects, they found they could control those who had become Soulless, and used them to attempt to wrest Leifandian society for themselves. It took the Master Mage of this time, a woman by the name of Berea Whitestorm, and a number of her acolytes to put a stop to the use of the Soulless, defeating the tyrant Ademamon and his followers. Berea then founded schools for the teaching of Gem Magic to Leifandians, urging them to live in harmony with the crystals they formed bonds with, as a way to keep the practice of the Soulless from returning to Leifandi.

Since then, with the instruction and guidance of the Master Mages and their acolytes, the denizens of Leifandi have been able to live in relative peace, both with the various communities that gradually continued to grow and with the world itself. Today, most Leifandians settle disagreements with the help of arbiters in each of the settlements, or with more than one if the disagreement happens to be between people of two different settlements.

Leifandian Culture and Spirituality

Leifandians have had an interesting history with the crystal formations of their world. Once the connection they bore to the planet’s mystical energies was discovered, many Leifandians believed the crystals to be extensions of the planets will, and for a time there was a great reverence to the formations and the Crystalloids. As time went on and Gem Magic became less rare among the Leifandians, there came a period where there was much discussion about the nature of the crystals, their bond to elemental powers and their place in society. Since that period, there are various beliefs that have cropped up; along with the idea that they could be extensions of the planets will, there are also schools of thought that purport them to be elemental beings or, perhaps, gods.

Regardless of the truth behind the crystal formations, the Leifandians have worked the crystals into their culture. Almost every Leifandian has some sort of necklace or bracelet bearing a piece of crystal infused flora, as this does not form a bond like a pure crystal piece does for a Gem Mage. Most non-gem mages are some sort of artisan, able to successfully work with both normal flora and crystalline flora. These artisans make everything from new housing or other structures, to furniture and clothing. Clothing consists of the colors of the crystalline formations, being gauzy and breathable for the summer seasons and sturdy and layer able for the winter seasons. Gem Mages usually wear clothing in the color of their bonded crystal, and the crystal is either woven into the fabric of the clothing or as an accessory that can be attached, as it must touch the skin for the mage to draw on it’s power.

Gem Magic

Gem Magic is only capable of being utilized by individuals born of Leifandi; there has been no documentation of any Crystalloids being able to bond with a crystal and wield it’s innate power. To be able to utilize a crystal’s power, one must first have an innate ability to sense and connect to the magical energies of Leifandi. In time, there is usually a feeling of being drawn to a specific formation, and upon arriving there a small chunk of the crystal is always awaiting the mage who was called. The crystal can be cut and refined without losing it’s abilities, though some mages choose to use the crystal in the form it was presented to them. A bond is formed between the mage and crystal, and over time the mage develops the ability to use their mystical abilities to draw out the inherent power of the crystal to perform various spells and effects. Most Gem Mages cannot bond with more than one crystal; even the current Master Mage of Leifandi is only bonded to two crystals. Those who have the power to form bonds with more than two crystals are rare, once in a generation beings.

Notable Sites

  • Perle: Capital city of Leifandi, oldest and most renowned settlement on Leifandi. The planning of the city allows it to be the dwelling place for thousands of citizens while also being one of the more open and natural settlements on the planet. The city itself is a love letter to the harmony wished for by the early Leifandians.
  • The Leifandian Mage Academy: While there are a multitude of branch sites throughout Leifandi, the main one sits in Perle, as both the oldest and grandest of the locations. Many of the Gem Mages who graduate from the Perle academy come from the city itself, however mages from the other cities are always invited to attend as well, to foster good relations between those who grew up in Perle and those who did not.
  • Whitestorm Rotunda: This is the hall in Perle where leaders from all over Leifandi meet to discuss matters of importance and work out any issues or disagreements between the settlements themselves. Also usually the seat of the Master Mage, though they generally split their time between the Perle Academny and here.
  • Lake Ontovia: The largest inland lake on Leifandi is also home to the most varied group of crystalline formations on the planet. The majority of Crystalloids are seen here, which has led some to designate this site as the settlement of the Crystalloids. While the area can be visited by anyone, there are certain boundaries the Crystalloids enforce, and only the Master Mage and select other Gem Mages have been allowed beyond.

Risen

October 28, 2021 //  by Andy

Risen

Phoenix paused before leaving the spot Mortis had left him at when he brought him back to the land of the living, wondering for a moment if he was truly free of Hades’ imprisonment. When no hell hounds arrived to drag him back down, he took a moment to look up at the sky. For the first time in a long, long while, it was blue with white clouds dotting it, rather than grey stone and ever present smoke.

Alighting to a nearby rooftop, Phoenix turned full circle, taking in the view of the city. This wasn’t the first time he’d been in Freedom City, but it had been a while, and he needed to get his bearings. The hustle and bustle of the city surprised him to a small degree; there seemed to be even more people here than before. Life kept on moving, it seemed, regardless of what it left behind.

Phoenix scowled inside his helmet, shaking his head as he felt a memory returning. Anger, hot as his flames, hot as Helios’ fire itself, threatened to consume him. “No, not yet.” he thought to himself, trying to tamp down the emotion. “I need more info first. Plus, I have a promise to keep. Doesn’t do well to flake on a promise to a necromancer.”

He looked down to his right wrist, where the computer was running calculations, parsing through the encrypted communication signal he’d piggybacked on when he shook Mortis’ hand. It pinged, indicating it had finished it’s task, granting him remote access to Freedom Hall and all it’s systems. “Daedalus, you old fool. Still using your old security methods, as though you don’t think ANYONE knows how your mind works.” he thought to himself, using the holographic display to page through the system. His brow furrowed as he read through damage reports and logs from the Freedom League, shocked at how devastating an enemy Una had been even before she’d managed to re-manifest in the physical plane. The Freedom League Dark was going to have it’s hands full trying to keep all of reality from falling apart it seemed, and if he wanted to be around to enact his plan, he’d have to help out in some way.

Continuing to absent mindedly scroll through the system records, something caught his eye. Blueprints, schematics for something big, another of Daedalus’ grand creations. But it didn’t seem like it was going to be a part of Freedom City. Phoenix began looking over everything more in depth, studying the plans and notes, smiling to himself as he did.

“Well, it looks like I know where to go to find him after all of this gets sorted out.” He though to himself, before unlocking the helmet and removing it from his head, his curly brown hair blowing in the wind. Looking up at the sky, he pointed a finger towards the heavens. “Just wait, Daedalus. You’ve got a little surprise coming, one you would never have expected.”

Ticking Clocks

Ticking Clocks

I’m getting too old for this… Callie Summers thought to herself as she reached for the controls of the Pegasus, flying away from where she had dropped Metropolis, Bowman, Centuria, Mortis and Resonant off in the sky. She knew that all five were among the most competent heroes on the planet, and she was unworried about their confrontation with Maximillian Mars. The man was dangerous, to be sure, but he had worked hard in the past few decades to put his life as a super criminal behind him. Why would he risk all of that now, and in such a public way? It didn’t add up.

The past few decades…

That was the crux of the problem, wasn’t it? She’d been at this for decades now. And where some of her teammates had inhuman physiques, she was all too aware of her mortality. She was still fast, and strong, and nimble. Her morning workout routine would put several Olympians to shame. But when she looked in the mirror, underneath Raven’s mask, there were the beginnings of wrinkles and crow’s feet.

She thought about the rest of the team – both present day and from when she had started. Captain Thunder was retired since losing his powers. Daedalus was mostly off at Starhaven these days. Johnny Rocket had been active until he lost his speed just a few weeks ago. Beth had passed the Lady Liberty mantle on to Sonia. Siren was back to reserve status, spending most of her time on the Gulf Coast instead of in Freedom City. So, for all intents and purposes, the only members of “her” version of the League anymore was herself and Doctor Metropolis.

“And he’s a living embodiment of the city,” she muttered to herself as she put the Pegasus into hover mode a half mile away from the MarsTech campus. She put the VTOL craft into hover mode and activated it’s cloaking device as she descended and doubled back using her swinglines. She was going to do some investigation, but it was going to be in the MarsTech building. Her teammates would serve as a distraction while she looked into Mars’ servers and labs.

The Raven didn’t think for a moment that the Silver Storm had anything to do with Una. The possibility that it might be required that it be investigated, but something about it felt far too… mundane. As if anything capable of bestowing superhuman powers could be considered mundane. She hated to pull the Freedom League Dark away from their mission, but she wanted to get to Emerald undetected – and there were other motivations as well.

As she landed off her swingline and effortlessly picked a lock on the rooftop access, allowing her into the MarsTech buildings, she thought about the new members of the League. Along with the new Lady Liberty and Doctor Metropolis, Bowman, Centuria, Mortis and Resonant were essentially the core of the Freedom League. Thunderbolt was too unstable, and Star Knight was off-planet as often as she was on, so they were it. She wanted to see how they conducted themselves when confronting Mars.

Then there was the matter of Portal. Peter Washington was a good kid who had a rough start, which is why she had him turned over to her father for training after briefly serving his sentence. As Portal, he had joined up with some of these new supers in Emerald City, and it looked like they might be positioning themselves to be the heroes of the city. Raven wanted to check in on that as well.

She made her way to Mars’ lab and popped the lock when she heard the sound of combat over the comms. Metropolis had just attacked Mars, unprovoked? That’s not like him… she thought as she listened more intently. It sounded like Freedom League Dark picked up on that and were wisely choosing to contain the situation instead of attacking Mars. Oh… and Portal and his allies were there as well.

Raven grimly smiled to herself. She hadn’t gotten as far as she had in this role by jumping into things thoughtlessly. This might be the best way to investigate Mars’ involvement in the storm, and also see how Portal and his teammates handled themself, while also seeing if the Freedom League Dark showed the signs of being ready and able to take the reigns as the core of the Freedom League.

After all, she wasn’t getting any younger. Eventually, her reflexes would slow to the point that she wouldn’t avoid the next bullet. Being a hero was a younger person’s game. And as Beth had shown her, there were other ways to serve the city than in wearing a costume and a cape. Since Mayor Grant was gone, there was soon going to be a special election. Perhaps Callie Summers should throw her hat into the ring…

The Forge

October 14, 2021 //  by Alexander Thomas

The Forge

Ethan stretched his neck as he stood from the three-legged stool. The small of his back ached, the first sign that the adrenaline of the day was beginning to fade. To be fair, it had been an eventful one; a day full of shock and change. He set his brush onto the tray, careful to keep the bristles out of shimmering gold paint. Ethan had been in the forge and the paint shop for the past few hours, working on his disguise? Disguise didn’t feel like the right word.

Uniform? No, too formal. Most of the folks in Freedom City, at least the people on the news, called the clothes superheroes wore costumes, but the mass of shining metal on the rack was more like armor. “Superhero. I can’t believe this is happening.” Ethan picked up the welding mask as he spoke to himself.

Tommy’s excitement had kept the buzz going in Ethan, but being alone with his thoughts in the silent shop was causing him to sober up. How did this even happen? One moment, he was on the bus and the next he was moving things with his mind, like some kind of Jedi. No not like a Jedi, he could only move metal.

Ethan groaned and put the mask down. He grabbed his forest green duffle bag and started loading it with armor pieces. His thoughts drifted away to the conversation with his father that morning. Somehow that was only a few hours ago. His dad wouldn’t even let him switch his major, how would he react if he found out about the whole Crucible thing? Tommy said that he should have Ryleigh help him with his alter ego, but she’d just run and tell his dad. No. His parents and/or their spouses couldn’t find out yet.

There was also the matter of the others: Marshall, Glados, Ice Princess, possibly even the scary robot octopus. Were they like him? People caught up in whatever gave him his powers, or were they something else? Wait, did the octopus get super powers today too? How did that happen? Was there a sushi restaurant down on Yellow Brick Row with a busted aquarium? It didn’t matter, they all worked together to stop those rampaging lunatics, and that was… Well it was something.

Ethan didn’t know how to get a hold of any of them, but Tommy would probably have some ideas. Tommy was probably going to have a lot of ideas in general from now on. He lugged the heavy duffle up by the straps and looked around the shop one more time. His eyes rested for a moment on Raina’s most recent piece: a framed illustration of a supervillain. She looked unsettling with patchwork skin and a spooky wooden mask. Marionette was written on the frame. He wished he knew the inspiration for Raina’s style. He wished he knew a lot of things about Raina.

Ethan sighed and flicked the light switch off in the shop. He had to get back to Tommy and figure out their next move.

USP At Origins 2021, a Retrospective

USP At Origins 2021, a Retrospective

A few weeks back (maybe more like a month or so now), we put up a blog post letting you all know that USP would be represented by our A-team (Aaron, Alex and Andy) in person at Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio, at the end of September/beginning of October. Well, the con has come and gone, and we are back and (mostly) recovered from our foray into convention gaming. It’d been over two years since we’d had the chance to run games at Origins, and I will say that, while it was worth the wait, it definitely could have happened sooner. 🙂

I just want to take some time before we get to our recap to thank those that came out and joined our games, endured our sales pitches, had a great time with our games and maybe decided to join in on watching our Live Plays either live on Twitch or replayed on YouTube. Now, on to the recap!

Thursday:

Unlike other years, Origins started on a Thursday rather than a Wednesday. So, right off the bat a bit different, a bit shorter, but I think we all jumped at the chance to test the convention waters, (hopefully) see some friends we’d made at past cons and make some new ones.

For USP, the day started off at 12 as the show opened with Aaron running the third game of his Mutants & Masterminds-based Disney adventure series, this one titled Farewell to the Magic Kingdom. We followed that up with my game at 1pm, an anime inspired Super Hero game set in a world of my own creation (also using M&M), titled Shattered Spotlight. Both of these games went off with wonderful players and grateful GMs for the chance to tell these stories to a new audience. The evening was rounded out by Alex’s first game of the con, and a bit of a departure for him, as he ran an Avengers game using Mutants & Masterminds, titled MODOK Family Reunion, and my game, set in the universe of Syfy’s Warehouse 13 series, titled A Con to Remember. This marked the first (but not last) game not using M&M for our team, as I ran this one using the Savage Worlds: Adventurer’s Edition rules. I know there were a few hiccups, as can happen at any con game, but overall both of these games were well received by the players as well.

Observation: I don’t think I’d done that much talking in a mask at all during the pandemic. While it took a bit more focus to be able to hear the players at the table, and hydration was more key than usual (even if it was a lot more difficult), getting back into running games in person was a bit like riding a bike after a hiatus: a little rusty at first while you get your bearings, but then once you’ve got them your off and moving. For the con itself, the dealer hall wasn’t open (yet), and it was a lot more spread out than usual with less attendees, but we were back in person running games with a bunch of other GMs and players, which was awesome.

Friday:

The USP day started bright and early at 8am, with Aaron and I both running games in what is typically the opening RPG slot time frame. Aaron continued his foray using M&M, with a game based on the show Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, called Miraculous-Less: Tales without Ladybug and Cat Noir, and I ran a game using Things From the Flood, Free League Publishing’s take on the 90s, titled The Shepherd’s Burden (Fun note: come back in November/December when we do our end of season one-shots if you’re interested in this one, I’ll be running it for our streaming audience).

Alex took over for us in both the afternoon and evening slots, running a game in his Titan City book universe at 2pm, titled Big Trouble in Little Moscow, and then at 7pm he finished the night off for USP with another foray into the Marvel-verse side of things with Sinister Six: Symbiosis, a villain based game (both games using M&M). Another good day in the books for running games. Happy gamers, happy GMs, even if we did need plenty of tea and sore throat drops.

Observation: The dealer hall was open today. More gamers out and about milling around, more games being run. It felt a little livelier, a little more like a regular Origins. Alex did have a fun little moment in his Sinister Six game; a player pulled the fire alarm at the Daily Bugle, and at that moment in the convention center, the fire alarm went off as well. An eerie occurrence to be sure.

Saturday:

Once again Aaron started off the USP day with another offering of his Disney game, this time in the opening slot at 8am (I should have gone down, he had some no shows after we couldn’t get in during registration, but it was just so hard to get up and go!). Alex took the afternoon slot with another of his Titan City book universe games, titled The Jordanow Mysteries at 2pm, and then he and I closed out the night, with him running a game based off the Mummy franchise (the Brendan Fraser films), titled The Lost Library at 7pm, and I ran a game based on the film The Rocketeer, titled Rocketeer Corp: Valley of the Red Gates, using the Hollow Earth Expedition ruleset, at 8pm (note to self: never again run a game that late; I was super tired after this one).

Observation: Saturday definitely felt the busiest at the convention, the dealer hall was bustling, saw a lot more people wandering around having a good time. Masking was enforced each day, though I rarely saw anyone not when they weren’t eating or drinking, and gamers seemed to have no issues complying with the rules or instructions of the con staff (we all know how bad it is to fail a Fortitude Saving Throw). For me, Saturday was shopping day at the dealer hall, with plenty of new board games picked up for play (some of which happened that afternoon, as I unfortunately had a no show for the only RPG I ended up with on my schedule).

Sunday:

Aaron was the last USP GM to run a game for the con, as he finished off the convention with another offering of his Miraculous-Less game. With that in the bag, we at USP had successfully completed our gamut of games for Origins Game Fair. All in all, USP GMs ran 12 games for the convention. We had a great time meeting all the new players we had, seeing familiar friends, and just putting out a new set of stories into the world. We’re already looking forward to next year, and we hope you’ll join us in early June when Origins happens in 2022!
